Share What He Has Done

Billy Graham's Daily Devotion 29 Jan 2012 I will declare thy name unto my brethren . . . –Psalm 22:22 There are those near you in your own community who need the regenerating power of Christ. You can call them by name. I suggest that you make a list and begin by spending time in prayer for them. Ask God to show you how to witness to them and how to win them. Their lives can be transformed by the message you give them. You are to share this Gospel you have received. If Christ has done anything for you, then share it. In so doing, you are showing mercy! As you have received the mercy of God by the forgiveness of sin and the promise of eternal life—thus you are to show mercy! And in showing mercy you will not only receive mercy but you will find a stimulating happiness! PRAYER FOR THE DAY As I close my eyes in prayer, let me see the faces of those who need to know You, beloved Savior.

Looking for God?

January 31, 2012 Mary Southerland Today's Truth Praise the LORD! For he has heard my cry for mercy. The LORD is my strength, my shield from every danger. I trust in him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving ( Psalm 28:6-7 , NLT). Friend to Friend God is constantly at work in our lives, preparing us to do with joy what He created us to do. A.B. Simpson said: "God is preparing His heroes. And when the opportunity comes He can fit them into their place in a moment.  And the world will wonder where they came from." When we understand that God integrates every life detail to accomplish His will, a deeper level of trust is born in our hearts.  God wants us to trust Him in every circumstance. Trust is letting go, knowing that God is more than enough. Trust is obedience because what I do reveals what I believe about God regardless of what I say. I don't think God wastes His direction on a disobedient

He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright." — Genesis 25:34 Students of the Bible will no doubt remember the story of Esau and Jacob – when Esau sold his birthright to his twin brother for a bowl of stew! Esau’s birthright was a blessing conferred upon him as the firstborn. It generally provided the firstborn son with a double portion of the father’s estate and considerable authority, since the firstborn became the head of the family. More importantly, the firstborn son was in line for his father’s blessing, which subsequently placed him in a close and favored relationship with God. The birthright was more than a material reward – it was a spiritual reward and blessing of great value. Which is why it is so stunning to r

The Throne of Grace

January 31, 2012 Hebrews 4:14-16 Almighty God is righteous and just. Romans 3:23 tells us that all people have sinned and are inadequate to be in His presence. As a result of His wrath against sin, we were doomed to eternal separation from Him. But thankfully, the story doesn't end there. In His love and mercy, God sent His Son to walk among us. Jesus experienced the hardship and temptation common to all people, yet He never sinned. The Savior chose to die a gruesome death in our place, paying the penalty for our wrongs. There is no deeper love, Scripture tells us, than a man who gives up his life for a friend (John 15:13). Jesus went even farther—dying for us while we were still His enemies (Rom. 5:10). In fact, He would have sacrificed Himself even if you were the only person ever to exist. Promising forgiveness and eternal life, Christ asks sinful man to believe and follow Him. When we trust in Jesus, we are adopted as God's children and receive His indwelli

Jesus is Our Comforter

Billy Graham's Daily Devotion . . . our Lord Jesus Christ . . . which hath loved us . . . comfort your hearts . . . –2 Thessalonians 2:16,17 Christ is the answer to sorrow. When Harry Lauder, the great Scottish comedian, received word that his son had been killed in France, he said, “In a time like this, there are three courses open to man: He may give way to despair and become bitter. He may endeavor to drown his sorrow in drink or in a life of wickedness. Or he may turn to God.” In your sorrow, turn to God. There are thousands of people who have turned to God, but you may be still carrying your burdens. God begs of you, “Cast all your care on me, for I care for you” (1 Peter 5:7). You who must go through the valley of the shadow of death, you who must say goodbye to those whom you have loved, you who suffer privation and misery, you who are unjustly persecuted for righteousness’ sake—take heart, take courage. Our Christ is more than adequate for sorrow. PRAYER FOR THE DA

Responsibility of Family

Billy Graham's Daily Devotion 27 Jan 2012 Bless me and my family forever! –2 Samuel 7:29 (TLB) Apart from religious influence, the family is the most important unit of society. It would be good if every home were Christian, but we know that it is not so. The family and the home can never exert their proper influence while ignoring the biblical standard. The Bible calls for discipline and a recognition of authority. If children do not learn this at home, they will go out into society without the proper attitude toward authority and law. There is always the exceptional child, but the average tells us that the child is largely what the home has made him. The only way to provide the right home for your children is to put the Lord above them, and fully instruct them in the ways of the Lord. You are responsible before God for the home you provide for them. PRAYER FOR THE DAY Father, keep me from any word or deed that might hinder a child from loving You.

The Best for Last

Listen now | Comment | Tell a Friend | Donate     Hebrew Word of the Day hafta’ah (surprise) Hear Translation » January 30, 2012 "So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son." — Ruth 4:13 You’ve heard it said in a variety of contexts about saving your best for last. Sometimes it’s said when a basketball player hits a clutch shot at the buzzer to win the game. Or an actor gives a standing-ovation performance in the final show before closing. Or a student aces the final exam. In each case, they saved their best effort for the last possible moment – and it helped win the championship, earn accolades, or pass the course! In a way, I think that God saved his best blessing for last in the story of Ruth. As we come to the final chapter in this short book, Ruth and Naomi’s situation has changed dramatically from one of hardship and a bleak future to one of re

God is the God of Lost Things

January 30, 2012 Sharon Jaynes Today's Truth "And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, 'rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.' In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents," ( Luke 15:9N IV). Friend to Friend It was New Year's Eve. Steve and I had shared a wonderful meal with friends and then circled a table for a feisty card game called Shanghi. As I reached to pick up my first hand, I noticed a void in my wedding ring. "Oh no," I cried, "Part of my wedding ring is missing. One of the diamonds is gone!" My wedding ring (which I received on our twentieth anniversary) has one diamond solitaire in the middle with two little triangles, called trillions, on each side. It was one of the settings for the triangle that lay empty. My mind retraced my steps through the day. I had cleaned the bathrooms, vacuumed the house, and

Enjoying Life

Ecclesiastes 2:1-23 Not only was King Solomon the wisest man who ever lived (1 Kings 3:12); he was also blessed with wealth beyond imagination and the privilege of building God's temple. So we might expect him to know deep contentment. Toward that end, Solomon devoted himself to studying and exploring all kinds of things. Ecclesiastes tells us that he indulged in the world's pleasures, even dabbling in pursuits he recognized as folly to see if there was anything worthwhile in them. But the satisfaction Solomon sought evaded him, and he concluded that self-indulgence was without value. The king tried another avenue to find fulfillment: personal achievement. He undertook great projects, such as building houses for himself, improving the environment with gardens and parks, and carrying out an extensive irrigation project (Eccl. 2:6). The king had everything he could ever need to enjoy life, but in the end, he found it all without meaning. The story has a familiar

Plan for Suffering

Billy Graham's Daily Devotion 26 Jan 2012 We work hard and suffer much in order that people will believe it, for our hope is in the living God who died for all . . . –1 Timothy 4:9,10 (TLB) Our life has its beginning in suffering. Life’s span is marked by pain and tragedy, and our lives terminate with the enemy called death. The person who expects to escape the pangs of suffering and disappointment simply has no knowledge of the Bible, of history, or of life. The master musician knows that suffering precedes glory and acclaim. He knows the hours, days, and months of grueling practice and self-sacrifice that precede the one hour of perfect rendition when his mastership is applauded. The student knows that years of study, privation and self-renunciation precede the triumphant day of graduation and honors. Yes, there are clouds of suffering for each one of us, but God says, “I come to you in the thick dark cloud of suffering,” By faith you can see His blessed face in the storm.

Don't Lose Sight

Billy Graham's Daily Devotion 25 Jan 2012 . . . when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem . . . –Luke 2:45 We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine holiness, and not intramural bickering and carnal disputes. We read in the second chapter of Luke that Joseph and Mary lost Jesus one day. Where did they lose Him? They lost Him in the most unlikely place in all the world—the Temple. I have seen many people lose Jesus right in the church. I have seen them lose Him in a dispute about who was to be choir director, who was to play the organ, who was to be an elder, or who was to be the minister. Yes, because we are human, though Christian, it is easy to lose sight of Jesus right in the temple! PRAYER FOR THE DAY Don’t let me lose sight of You, Lord, in the complex logistics of everyday

Character Study

May the Lord repay you for what you have done." — Ruth 2:11–12 In A. A.Milne’s childhood classic book, Winnie the Pooh , one of the most beloved characters is the old stuffed grey donkey, Eeyore. His body language speaks volumes about the type of character he is – head slung down, droopy tail and ears, sad-looking eyes. You just know he is a gloomy, pessimistic sort of character – even without the rain cloud that often hovers over him! Sometimes, you can tell a lot about people just by watching them interact with others and studying their body language. It’s evident from the Bible account that oth

The Beauty of Romantic Love

January 25, 2012 Sharon Jaynes Today's Truth "Show me your face, let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet and your face is lovely," (Song of Songs 2;14 NIV). Friend to Friend Aren't you glad that God refers to the Church as the Bride of Christ? I asked my husband what pictures come into his mind when he reads God's description of the Church as the Bride of Christ. He gave me a strange look and said, "none, really." I'll admit, I can't picture Steve walking down the aisle in a flowing wedding gown, but oh sister, I can see myself dressed in a satin and lace, pearl-studded gown with a flowing veil, and walking down the aisle of heaven to meet Jesus-my heavenly Bridegroom. Can't you? What glorious imagery God has given to His female image bearers. Perhaps one of the most romantic books in the Bible is the Song of Songs, or as some translations title it, The Song of Solomon. While it can be read as King Solomon's wooing

The Love Chapter: Paul describes the highest spiritual gift of all

Today's reading: 1 Corinthians 13 1 Corinthians 13:2 If I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing . During one of the most stressful times of his career, Paul makes his first visit to the Greek city of Corinth (see Acts 17-18 for the details). Lynch mobs chased him out of Thessalonica and Berea. The next stop, Athens, brought on a different kind of confrontation, with intellectual scoffers. Paul arrives at Corinth in a fragile emotional state. Soon opposition springs up in Corinth too. Jewish leaders become abusive and haul Paul into court. It seems the harassed apostle will have no rest from his enemies. But in the midst of this crisis, God visits Paul with a special message of comfort: "Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city" ( Acts 18:9-10 ). Different Kind of Love These last words must have startled Paul, for

Meeting Spiritual Needs

Billy Graham's Daily Devotion 24 Jan 2012 Go and make disciples in all the nations . . . –Matthew 28:19 (TLB) Christian missions is unique in the aggressive movements of history. Christianity in its pure form has no “axe to grind,” no system to foster, and no profit motivation. Its job is simply to “seek and to save that which is lost.” Nothing more, nothing less. The words “apostle” and “missionary” mean the same thing: “One who is sent.” The word apostle is from the Greek; and the word missionary is from the Latin. The New Testament is a book of missions. The Gospels tell of Jesus’ missionary accomplishments, and the Acts tell of the missionary endeavors of the apostles. The disciples were launched into the world by the power of the resurrection, and the Gospel made its impact upon the world’s people. Peter went to Lydda, Joppa, Antioch, Babylon, and Asia Minor. John went to Samaria, Ephesus, and to the cities on the Mediterranean. Thomas journeyed to far away India. Pau

Llegue mi oración a tu presencia; Inclina tu oído a mi clamor.

Wait Upon the Lord

Billy Graham's Daily Devotion 23 Jan 2012 Glory in the Lord; O worshipers of God, rejoice. Search for him and for his strength, and keep on searching! –Psalm 105:3,4 (TLB) Jerome, one of the early Christians, said, “Ignorance of the Bible means ignorance of Christ.” Job once said, “I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.” Jeremiah said, “Thy words were found and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart.” To read the Bible one needs a “quiet time.” Christian students often ask, “How do you maintain your spiritual high? What do you do on a daily basis?” I tell them about my “quiet time.” Some days it is in the early—sometimes late—morning, sometimes evening. Without it, my Christian life would be a wilderness. Isaiah said, “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). To Know Him More

January 24, 2012 Mary Southerland Today's Truth I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better ( Ephesians 1:17 , NIV). Friend to Friend It was Christmas Eve and I had a final errand to run. One of the gifts I ordered for our grandson still had not arrived. I ordered it several weeks earlier and patted myself on the back for the great deal I had gotten, but in all the delightful Christmas chaos, I had forgotten all about it until Christmas Eve when I made the final inspection of my Christmas list and stash of gifts for the kids and grandkids. The Customer Service manager at the department store from which I ordered the gift had no idea where the gift was or what had happened to it but offered to trace it. I laughed. Trace it? He was obviously unaware that looking for a missing gift on Christmas Eve was not an option! I pressed on. After several frustrating and
