Refined by Fire

July 31, 2012 Read | 1 Peter 1:6-7 God is always at work in our lives. Even during seasons of adversity, He wants to accomplish something powerful and good. How should this knowledge affect our response? Today's passage teaches us to choose to rejoice during difficult times. This doesn't mean we have to be happy about the hardship itself. Instead, joy comes from drawing close to the Lord and believing steadfastly that through His redemptive power, He is growing and preparing us. If your usual response to trials is anxiety, anger, or depression, the idea of having joy in the midst of a negative situation might not seem logical. However, if you look beneath the surface, you will discover that this biblical directive makes sense for several reasons. Often, our natural reaction to pain is to run in the opposite direction, and as fast as possible. However, God wants to teach us endurance--much like a long-distance runner builds up strength in training--so that we can fully

When the Soul Bleeds

July 31, 2012 Sharon Jaynes Today's Truth [Jesus said] "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering" ( Mark 5:31-34 NIV). Friend to Friend When we read the story of Jesus healing the woman who had been bleeding for twelve years, it is hard for us twenty-first century women to imagine such a condition lasting for so long. Medical science has progressed far beyond the rudimentary knowledge of Jesus' day. It is simply unthinkable today. But I suggest there are still many women with chronic bleeding of a different sort. We bleed from the heart. From the time Sarah was six-years-old, her father crept into her bedroom in the dark of night and violated her little body. Now, as an adult, her heart bleeds. When Beth was walking to her dorm room from the college library, a lurker jumped from behind the bushes, dragged her to a nearby shed and raped her at knife-point. Now, ten years later, her heart bleeds. After twenty-years

PRAYER POINTS

While some in the international community continue to show their harsh anti-Israel bias, we, as Christians and Jews, stand firm in our faith, stand firm for Israel, and rejoice in the promises God has made. " This is what the Lord says: ‘I will return to Zion and dwell in Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the City of Truth, and the mountain of the Lord Almighty will be called the Holy Mountain. ’" (Zechariah 8:3-5) Pray for peace around the world. May all of God's creation live justly, in community with one another, and in the light of His love. " How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity! " (Psalm 133:1) Pray for all of the Fellowship -sponsored programs in Israel, and around the world. We ask that, with God's help, they will continue to be lifesaving and life-enhancing for impoverished Jews and Jews who live in danger. " “‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings a

That "Little" Sin

July 30, 2012 Mary Southerland Today's Truth Matthew 7:3 (NIV) "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?" Friend to Friend My husband, Dan, was a church pastor in South Florida for several years. One of our favorite traditions at that church was the Thanksgiving Day breakfast. Even our kids got in on the action. We woke while it was still dark and headed to the church to help dozens of volunteers mix and cook mountains of pancakes, stacks of bacon, and, as they say in the south, a heap of eggs and biscuits … in short, a scrumptious Thanksgiving breakfast. Following the breakfast, we had a time of worship, and Dan shared a brief message after which families headed home to enjoy the rest of their holiday. Then the cleanup began. We all shifted into high gear, breaking down tables, washing dishes and getting the buildings ready for the weekend services. The kids quickly completed their a

Knowing God's Voice

July 29, 2012 Many people wonder today if God still speaks to believers. This question is the subject of numerous books, articles, and lectures. If He does communicate directly to His followers, how does He do so? Can we know the message is really from Him? The Lord speaks to us through the Holy Spirit. He is the third person of the Trinity, co-equal with God the Father and God the Son. God's Spirit dwells within each Christian, just as Jesus promised in John 14: "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you." (vv. 15-17, emphasis added). The book of Acts records several occasions when the Holy Spirit spoke to Paul and Peter. It can't be denied that those men had a special gift and call upon their lives.

Thank God—your prayers are answered!

Dear Jorge, Thank God—your prayers are answered! On Sunday, July 29, our missionary Ponnachan George was released unharmed by the terrorist group that had kidnapped him almost a week earlier in Assam, India. All around the world, the people of God prayed, and just as in Acts 12, we have experienced His mercy. I talked to Pastor Ponnachan a few hours ago. He simply wept for a long time, unable to say much. He thanked God and the Body of Christ for the massive fasting and prayer that took place on his behalf. After kidnapping him at gunpoint, the terrorists blindfolded him and tied his hands behind his back. They forced him to walk for hours deep into the forest to their hideout. Throughout Ponnachan's entire ordeal, his captors repeatedly told him they were going to shoot him and would not spare him. He could hear them discuss their next moves and plans for demanding money, but he remained calm. We may be able to share more details later about the week-long, near-

God Uses the Wicked

July 26, 2012 Read | Genesis 37-39 When we don't understand what God is doing or why, His ways can seem perplexing. The times when ungodly people seem to triumph over the righteous make us scratch our heads and wonder why the Lord doesn't intervene. But the truth is, He oftenuses the wicked to accomplish His purpose. Joseph faced one hard-hearted individual after another during his years in exile. His brothers shipped him off to Egypt. His boss's wife accused him of an unspeakable crime. And even those he helped, like Pharaoh's cupbearer, forgot about him (Gen. 40:23). The actions (or seeming inactions) of God make little sense at this point. But once the story of Joseph's life was written in full, it was clear that everyone who harmed or neglected the young man contributed to God's plan. The Lord used numerous people across several years to bring a humbled young Hebrew unexpectedly to power at the right moment to spare his family--who were the Messia

In His Eyes Part 2

July 25, 2012 Mary Southerland Today's Truth I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be ( Psalm 139:14-15 , NIV). Friend to Friend God can set you free to be all He created you to be. A healthy self-image is not rooted in pride, and it does not exalt self above others. Success comes when we learn to accept God's evaluation instead of our own and when we give Him permission to make us what He created us to be. Yesterday, we examined the first two steps we can take to understand who we are in His eyes. Today, we will look at four more steps. Step three: Be yourself. We should always be looking for something new to learn, an area where we can grow and changes that need

What Not to Say to a Hurting Person

Job 6 Job’s friends only made it worse Job 6:21 “Now you too have proved to be of no help.” You are sitting in a hospital room, where the faint smell of antiseptic lingers and the sound of lowered voices rustles all around you. The medical prognosis of your friend is bleak. You’ve listened to your friend’s anger and despair, and a jumble of other emotions. Now it’s your turn to reply. Everyone in the room waits for your response. What do you say to a suffering person? The book of Job gives page after page of examples. Job’s three friends, finding him in despair, filled the air with high-sounding advice. But unfortunately they offer models of what not to say. Their main argument only made Job feel worse, and at the end God dismissed them all with a scowl. Who Were Job’s Friends? This book gives few details on time and place, but it presents Job as a very wealthy “sheik” of the Middle East. His three friends, from neighboring lands, were also prosperous and well respected. And in recent decades, in His kindness, God has allowed His people to re-settle the Holy Land and build it into a light among the nations. But for centuries upon centuries, all the Jewish people were able to do was pine for their homeland, hoping against hope that one day they would be able to return. So during all those long years – and even today, for those who have not yet had the opportunity to see the land of Israel – what was a Jewish person to do while in exile? How could the Jewish people
