The Wrestling Match

October 31, 2012 Gwen Smith Today's Truth Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. ( Ephesians 6:10-12 , NIV) Friend to Friend It was the end of the school year. The sun was blazing in the sweltering high 80s with not a hint of shade to be found on the treeless playground. The boys were stinky from their sweaty schoolyard endeavors and the girls were now wilted versions of the fresh flowers they had been that morning. It was almost time for the big wrestling competition. Electric excitement lingered in the air. I was a fifth grader at West Hempfield Elementary School in Irwin, Pennsylvania and I had signed up to participate in the wrestling match. To this day, I&#

Sermon on the Mount: A model prayer and some perplexing advice

Matthew 6 Matthew 6:33 “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6, a continuation of the Sermon on the Mount, contains the Lord’s Prayer, perhaps the most famous prayer of all time. This model prayer by Jesus captures well the message of the kingdom: “Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” ( Matthew 6:10 ). Jesus seeks to bring the two worlds together, and the Sermon on the Mount explains how. At first glance, some of Jesus’ advice may seem downright foolish: Give to everyone who asks, love your enemies, turn the other cheek, grant interest-free loans, don’t worry about clothes or food. Can such idealism ever work in the “real,” or visible, world? That is precisely Jesus’ point: Break your obsession with safety, security, thriftiness, self-righteousness. Depend instead on the Father, letting God take care of the personal injustices that come your way, trusting God to look after your dai

No Condemnation

Oct 30, 2012 Read | Romans 8:1-4 Some believers are plagued by feelings of condemnation. Either they think they'll never live up to God's expectations for them or they're nearly drowning in guilt over past sins. These men and women cannot seem to shake the sense that God is displeased with their puny efforts at being Christlike. The book of Romans confronts this lie head-on: "There is therefore no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus" (Rom. 8:1). When the Savior went to the cross on our behalf, He lifted the blame from our shoulders and made us righteous before God. Those feelings of condemnation do not belong to us; they are from Satan. He amplifies our guilt and feelings of inadequacy and then suggests that's how the Lord feels about His "wayward child." Nothing could be further from the truth. Our sins are wiped clean, and we are chosen and loved by God. Condemnation is reserved for those who reject the Lord (John 3:36). Sin is

Getting out of God's Way

The Reward of the Believer

Oct 26, 2012 Read | 1 Corinthians 3:6-9 Our God-given purpose is to glorify our heavenly Father. Ephesians 2:10 sheds light on the means by which we accomplish this: "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works." As believers, we are responsible to do the Lord's work. One day, we will stand before the judgment seat of Christ and be held accountable for our service. "Judgment" can be a daunting term. Remember, though, that Jesus redeemed us by His death and resurrection and paid the penalty for our sins. He took our punishment, and we no longer face condemnation (Rom. 8:1). Christ's judgment for Christians determines His rewards for each believer. During this evaluation, God will test our actions. Scripture likens this to proving the quality of a substance through fire. Once the fire burns away impure motives and worthless tasks, the Lord will give recompense for that which remains. From the outside, we may look as if we&

Our Noisy Democracy

October 25, 2012 Dear Friend of Israel, On November 6, American voters will head to the polls to choose the next President of the United States, as well as senators, congressmen, governors, and municipal officials. It has been a heated election season, and the rhetoric has increased noticeably in the past several weeks of debates and ad campaigns leading up to election day. The excitement and occasional unruliness of this political season reminds me of   something once said by the English writer Charles Moore . In a stirring essay on Israel, Moore praised the Jewish state as “robust in its legal and political institutions, free in its press and universities a noisy democracy.” Moore’s description could apply equally to Israel and the U.S. Both countries engage in “noisy” and ongoing public conversation on a host of issues. Sometimes this conversation can become overly partisan and bitter, and shed more heat than light. But, far from a sign of societal weakness, I lo

I'm not_______ enough.

Sharon Jaynes Today's Truth "Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?" ( 1 Corinthians 3:16 ). Friend to Friend I'm not _____________ enough. You can fill that blank in with smart, talented, gifted, spiritual, or any number of positive attributes. But the root source of each one of those lies is "I'm not good enough." It is one of the enemy's favorite weapons and he uses it to keep God's children in bondage to feelings of inferiority, insecurity, and inadequacy. The bottom line is, the enemy wants you to believe that you are "not enough." Period. But you are enough . You are enough and have been equipped by God and empowered by the Holy Spirit to do everything that God has called you to do. It seems the message of "I'm not good enough to earn my way to heaven on my own," has been transformed into I'm not good enough...period. God created man and woman a

Our Growth as Christians

Oct 24, 2012 Read | Galatians 2:20 There's a goal to the Christian life, which God expresses this way: "For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son" (Rom. 8:29). This refining process is called sanctification. And there are several identifiable stages en route to this goal, but sadly, most believers are unfamiliar with them. Let me offer some definitions so you can identify where you are on the journey and understand what to expect. Salvation is the first stage of the Christian life. This describes our redemption from sinfulness through Jesus' atoning sacrifice. What results is forgiveness of sin, which lets us have a relationship with Almighty God. Next, God gives us opportunity to serve (Eph. 2:10). We were created to do good works in Jesus' name. But at some point, we notice something isn't working. This is the start to stage three: frustrated inadequacy. This unpleasant but necessary part of the

No Secrets: Jesus is a man on a mission

John 10 John 10:24 The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” Every few years an author or scholar or even a movie maker raises new questions—or the same old questions—about Jesus’ identity. Often such portrayals show him wandering around the earth in a daze, trying to figure out why he came and what he is supposed to be doing. Nothing could be further from the account given us by John, Jesus’ closest friend. According to John, Jesus was a man on a mission who knew exactly what he had come to Earth to accomplish. John states his purpose in writing very clearly: to get people to believe in Jesus the Messiah (see John 20:31 ). His book selectively features incidents from Jesus’ life to demonstrate who Jesus is. Shepherd of Israel “I am the gate,” Jesus says in chapter 10; “I am the good shepherd” ( John 10:9 , 11 ). Jews who hear these words undoubtedly think back to Old Testament king

Making Disciples

Oct 23, 2012 Read | Matthew 28:18-20 Scripture teaches us to tell others about Jesus Christ. And while sharing the gospel is awesome, it is simply not enough. We should continue to encourage and invest in new believers. Many don't know where to begin reading in the Bible or how to spend time with their heavenly Father. Of course, God takes each person's spiritual journey seriously, and He won't leave a seeking heart unsatisfied. At the same time, we have a responsibility to invest in the lives of spiritual brothers and sisters by sharing our understanding and experience. This type of teaching is called discipleship, and it is both an honor and a great responsibility. As you commence this type of relationship, consider the following points. First, make sure to continually spend time with the Lord so that you are growing and in tune with His Spirit. Second, be prepared with a plan. Your friend needs to understand the basics, such as how to read the Bible, what pr

Avoiding Compromise

Oct 22, 2012 Read | Proverbs 2:1-22 Although the temptation to compromise threatens every believer, we don't have to give in. If we're aware of the danger and understand the downward progression and ultimate consequences, we can determine to be vigilant in obedience to the Lord. The first step in learning how to avoid compromise is understanding why it is so tempting. When others pressure us to take part in in what we know God has forbidden, it's easy to give in because we don't want to feel rejected. But anyone who's committed to living a godly life must be willing to stand alone and face ridicule or even persecution (2 Tim. 3:12). At other times, we consent to activities that violate our conscience just to avoid conflict, but peace at any price means we have to sacrifice obedience to God. However, the temptation to compromise doesn't always originate with others. In fact, James 1:14 says we are tempted when we're carried away by our own lusts. H
