Sermon on the Mount: A model prayer and some perplexing advice

Matthew 6 Matthew 6:33 “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6, a continuation of the Sermon on the Mount, contains the Lord’s Prayer, perhaps the most famous prayer of all time. This model prayer by Jesus captures well the message of the kingdom: “Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” ( Matthew 6:10 ). Jesus seeks to bring the two worlds together, and the Sermon on the Mount explains how. At first glance, some of Jesus’ advice may seem downright foolish: Give to everyone who asks, love your enemies, turn the other cheek, grant interest-free loans, don’t worry about clothes or food. Can such idealism ever work in the “real,” or visible, world? That is precisely Jesus’ point: Break your obsession with safety, security, thriftiness, self-righteousness. Depend instead on the Father, letting God take care of the personal injustices that come your way, trusting God to look after your da

The Persecution of Christians

Dear Mr. Olmo:      Thank you for contacting me to express your concerns about the persecution of Christians. I share your concern about violations of religious freedom and other human rights abuses against Christians and other religious groups across the globe.      In an effort to promote tolerance and respect for religious freedom worldwide, the 105th Congress passed the International Religious Freedom Act, which was signed into law by President Clinton on October 27, 1998. This law authorizes the U.S. government to impose sanctions in response to violations of religious freedom in foreign countries.  This law also established an Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom, a Commission on International Religious Freedom, and required annual reports on the state of religious freedom around the world.      Congress has been active in ensuring that the International Religious Freedom Act is implemented and enforced effectively.  In recent years, Congress has

No Secrets: Jesus is a man on a mission

John 10 John 10:24 The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” Every few years an author or scholar or even a movie maker raises new questions—or the same old questions—about Jesus’ identity. Often such portrayals show him wandering around the earth in a daze, trying to figure out why he came and what he is supposed to be doing. Nothing could be further from the account given us by John, Jesus’ closest friend. According to John, Jesus was a man on a mission who knew exactly what he had come to Earth to accomplish. John states his purpose in writing very clearly: to get people to believe in Jesus the Messiah (see John 20:31 ). His book selectively features incidents from Jesus’ life to demonstrate who Jesus is. Shepherd of Israel “I am the gate,” Jesus says in chapter 10; “I am the good shepherd” ( John 10:9 , 11 ). Jews who hear these words undoubtedly think back to Old Testament ki

Participating in Great Works Through Prayer

Oct 22, 2013 Read | John 16:23-24 Divine miracles occur daily: when closed minds open, the spiritually blind suddenly see the gospel’s truth, and rebels surrender and become God’s children. Jesus promised that we who believe can have a part in great works like these by making requests in His name. Our heavenly Father waits for us to draw near with our big petitions. He looks to see that we are asking based on the merits and reconciling work of Christ, that we have confessed all known sin, and that we firmly believe He’ll do what He has said. In other words, we are not to doubt; our Father wants us to have faith that He will both keep His promises and respond for our good. He delights in giving His children gifts (Matt. 7:11). God answers our requests when they are in alignment with His plan. And we know He won’t act in a manner inconsistent with His character. So by searching the Scriptures, we can discover whether our desires line up with God’s nature and promises. We mi

Sin Like a Cancer

2 Samuel 18 First David, then his family, then a nation 2 Samuel 18:33 “O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you—O Absalom, my son, my son!” Sins: Many people think of them as parking tickets. If you get too many, the cops may track you down or give your car “the boot.” However, one or two here and there won’t make a big difference. The Bible views sins more as cancer cells. One or two here and there do make a difference—often the difference between life and death. Because cancer cells grow, multiply and take over, major surgery may be needed to save your life. Second Samuel 11—20 reads like the history of a spreading cancer. In the beginning, David was on top of the world—and so was Israel. The civil war was over, the land was at peace and Israel was entering an era of unprecedented prosperity. God had promised to ensure David’s descendants a continuous reign forever. What more could David hope for? The rest of life appeared as one long

Relying on Our All-Sufficient God

Oct 16, 2013 Read | 2 Corinthians 3:1-6 Many people would scoff at the idea of inadequacy as a way the Lord blesses believers—the feeling can be so disheartening that it seems illogical to think in terms of benefit. Yet Christians can use shortcomings as stepping stones to blessing: 1. Our inadequacy forces us to do our work in the power of the Holy Spirit. Anything that puts us on our knees and drives us to God has to be good. 2. Awareness of our limitations can relieve us of the burden of trying to do God’s will in our own strength. Without the Holy Spirit, we will be crushed by weights we cannot carry. 3. Another blessing is that such awareness “frees” the Lord to use us to the maximum of our potential. When we are lowly enough to feel our need, then God will raise us to great heights. 4. Acknowledging our shortcomings allows God to get all the glory for His work. Spiritually minded people can tell when something is of God—and when it’s not. If you are in the Spiri

Luego

Advancing Through Adversity

Oct 11, 2013 Read | Deuteronomy 4:7 There are many people who get stuck in life’s hard spots, too scared or too bitter to move through the difficulty. Instead, these folks wait for the Lord to remove the trial, and yet He doesn’t always work that way. But God wants His children to trust Him so they can advance through their adversity. The way that a person responds to hardship reveals his or her true character. And tough situations are the times when God’s children most need to match actions to words. It’s easy to say, “I trust the Lord” or “My God is faithful” when life is good. But unless believers recognize that He is sovereign even in adversity, they may be tempted to complain and seek pity. Christians who trust in the Lord’s faithfulness and supremacy will steadfastly focus on Him and as a result will see their anxiety and doubt subside. In order to conquer adversity, we must begin moving through it. Even though we may not know what God’s purpose is, it’s essential f

Is Jesus better than religion?

Jefferson Bethke played baseball in college, got a degree in politics and government, and taught high school social studies in the Seattle area.  On January 20, 2012, he released a YouTube video titled, " Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus ."  Within three days it had received six million views.  It has now been seen more than 25 million times . Jonathan Merritt , one of my favorite faith and culture writers, recently talked with Bethke about his new book, " Jesus > Religion: Why He is So Much Better Than Trying Harder, Doing More, and Being Good Enough ."  In the interview Bethke affirms discipline, church attendance, rhythms and routine.  However, he worries about "people that use [religion] to describe moral behaviors that place you in right standing with God." He just described the way faith worked for me, for many years.  When I was in high school, my week usually included Sunday school and worship, Sunday evening worship, Tuesday night visitati

Perfect Storm: One last obstacle before reaching Rome

Acts 27 Acts 27:22 “But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed.” This chapter gives an eyewitness account of an ocean storm, the once-in-a-decade kind of storm that survivors never forget. Dense clouds blot out the sun and stars for many days and nights; the entire shipload of 276 passengers and crew goes without food for two weeks, and no one knows whether the passengers will survive to see another day. No one, that is, except the apostle Paul. Prisoner in Charge Luke vividly depicts the onboard frenzy: sailors lashing ropes around their groaning ship, the crew heaving precious food supplies and even the ship’s tackle overboard, Roman soldiers with drawn swords halting the sailors’ save-our-own-necks escape attempts and preparing to slash their prisoners’ throats. In the midst of all this hysteria stands the apostle Paul, calmly foretelling what will happen next. God has promised him he will visit Rom
