The strangest bumper sticker I've ever seen

Coexist bumper sticker (Credit: coexiststore.org)The other day I was driving to our office and found myself behind a car displaying the popular bumper sticker, COEXIST.  As you can see, each of the letters is shaped from a different

religious symbol: the C is from Islam, the X is a Star of David, the T is a cross, and so on.

That wasn't surprising.  But this was: higher on the car was a sticker stating, "SOMETIMES I WRESTLE WITH MY DEMONS SOMETIMES WE JUST SNUGGLE."

Ironically, the rear license plate was set inside a frame which stated, "DON'T FOLLOW ME I'M LOST TOO."

"More than you know," I thought.

One of Satan's most subtle strategies is to confuse opinion with truth.  "I'm spiritual but not religious" is a common claim today.  Many in our culture think they are the final arbiter on spiritual truth.  "I don't believe in hell," a man once told me with finality, as though his opinion had any bearing on whether hell actually exists or not.  It's like saying, "I don't believe in Mars" and expecting an astrophysicist to stop trying to convince me of the planet's existence.

Sometimes I wrestle with my demons... sometimes we just snuggle funny vinyl decal bumper sticker (Credit: StickARoo via Amazon.com)Many think "all roads lead to heaven," but they don't think all roads lead to the same destination on earth. Many think "it doesn't matter which religion you choose so long as you're sincere," but they'd never try this axiom with medicine.  Many think that "tolerance is what matters in religion," but they would never tolerate poison in our food or cancer in our body.  Many are especially interested in the occult today, but most have no idea what forces they're "snuggling" with.  Our enemy is very real, and he "prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour" (1 Peter 5:8).

Our society is syncretistic (fusing many different religions) and relativistic (convinced that all truth claims are equally valid).  First century culture was equally confused.  Peter renounced political correctness for transforming truth when he said of Jesus, "There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).

Today you can be popular or you can be prophetic, but you can seldom be both.  Choose wisely.

In His Eyes

July 23, 2012 Mary Southerland Today's Truth I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be ( Psalm 139:14-15 , NIV). Friend to Friend It was my first day of teaching second grade. While standing at the classroom door, greeting parents and children, I felt a tug on my skirt. I looked down into the beautiful blue eyes of Sammy, one of my new students.  His mother, who was standing beside Sammy, looked at me and said, "I guess you've heard about Sammy.  Good luck!" As she walked away, Sammy said, "She's right. I'm dumb and mean and can't read or write."  Lisa was a tall, blonde and beautiful young woman with zero self-confidence. Lisa was...

The Danger in Being a Christian: It began as a Jewish sect; fierce persecution only helped it spread

Acts 8 Acts 8:1 On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. In some countries, a person who becomes a Christian forfeits a good education and job. And in a few countries, a person who converts risks his or her life. One church historian estimates that more Christians were martyred in the twentieth century than in all preceding centuries put together. Yet, strangely, more often than not, intense persecution of Christians leads to a spurt of growth in the church. An ancient saying expresses this phenomenon: “The blood of martyrs is the seed of the church.” The First Big Advance For a while, the new faith enjoyed popular favor. But very soon it involved grave risk. In the book of Acts, the persecution that produced the first Christian martyr, Stephen, ironically brought about the advance of Christianity outside its Jewish base. Forced out of stormy Jerusalem, the scatterin...
